Discover the story behind Perth, Ontario
We acknowledge that Perth and Lanark County are located on the unceded traditional territory of the Omàmìwininì (Algonquin) people. We recognize and respect the enduring relationship that Indigenous Peoples have with this land and are committed to learning from and honouring its shared history.
Perth was established in 1816 as one of several military settlements created by the British government following the War of 1812. Intended to encourage settlement in what was then Upper Canada's interior, the community welcomed military veterans, their families, and immigrants from Scotland, Ireland, England, and other parts of Europe. Named after Perth, Scotland, the town quickly developed into an important administrative, commercial, and cultural centre.
Today, Perth's rich history is reflected in its beautifully preserved stone buildings, heritage streetscapes, museums, and landmarks, while the stories of those who have called this region home continue to shape the community.
