Town of Perth Eliminates Bag Tags and Streamlines Garbage Collection Program

The Town of Perth will end the requirement to place bag tags on regular garbage bags and introduce a simpler bag-limit program. Tags will remain available for any additional bags beyond the bi-weekly allotment.

Under the new program, each household may place up to two bags of garbage at the curb every other week. This represents a service level increase, as the previous tag allocation equated to about 1.5 bags every other week.

Leftover tags can still be used for additional bags beyond the limit, or extra tags may be purchased at Town Hall. Tags will no longer be required for standard garbage collection. By removing the need for residents to pick up annual tags at Town Hall, the new system provides a simpler, more consistent, and more convenient approach to garbage collection.

This change not only simplifies the process but also increases the level of service for residents. With a consistent two-bag allowance every other week, households now have more flexibility than under the previous tag system. Residents are also encouraged to continue using recycling and weekly green bin collection to keep waste diversion strong in our community.

In addition, Town Council passed a motion at the August 26th meeting to reduce the cost of bag tags from $3.30 to $2.00. This change will come into effect once the Town’s Fees & Charges By-Law is formally updated. A Public Notice will be issued at a later date to notify the public when Council will be considering the amendment.
