Mayor's Declaration - John Andrew Hope Day - September 10, 2026

Whereas John Andrew Hope was a proud son of the Town of Perth whose life and legacy reflect exceptional service to his community, province, and country; and

Whereas John Andrew Hope began his distinguished legal career in Perth before serving with honour in the First World War, where he was wounded twice in the line of duty; and

Whereas, following his military service, he returned to civilian life with a deep commitment to public service, contributing significantly to the advancement of healthcare in the region through his founding role in the Great War Memorial Hospital, now known as Perth & Smiths Falls District Hospital; and

Whereas his exemplary legal career saw him appointed as a judge, and later serving with distinction on the Court of Appeal, as well as leading a Royal Commission, demonstrating his enduring dedication to justice and public service in Ontario; and

Whereas John Andrew Hope’s legacy continues to be recognized through historical publications, community remembrance, and the forthcoming installation of a commemorative plaque by the Ontario Heritage Trust, marking his lasting contributions to the community and province; and

Whereas it is fitting that the Town of Perth formally recognize and celebrate the life and achievements of this remarkable individual, ensuring that present and future generations understand and appreciate his contributions;

Now Therefore I, Mayor Judy Brown, on behalf of the Council of the Town of Perth, do hereby proclaim September 10, 2026, “John Andrew Hope Day”, in the Town of Perth, to coincide with the commemorative plaque unveiling, and encourage all residents to reflect upon and celebrate the life, service, and legacy of John Andrew Hope, a true son of Perth whose contributions continue to shape our community.
