Repurposing rustic items has always been a natural love of mine. I love antiques, unique items and re-working odd materials to build something beautiful. The imperfect, weathered textures of old grooved woods, time-worn metals and old wavy glass show wonder and potential in a beauty that cannot be manufactured. I create household and yard items where every piece is unique and has its own story. The products to be displayed in the 'Perth Night Market' will include birdhouses, mirrors, small furniture, and decorative pieces that are repurposed from dismantling barns and materials that I have salvaged myself (from local barns and outbuildings). After graduating from Algonquin College in Perth, I wanted to use my knowledge of the Heritage & Carpentry Course to showcase my love of old materials, that would otherwise get thrown out, to make pieces that are useful, rustic and beautiful.

A stroopwafel combines two elements: Stroop (creamy caramel syrup) and a Wafel. The combination of the crispiness of the waffle and the chewy gooey caramel creates a one-of-a-kind taste and texture EXPERIENCE. Using our Dutch Stroopwafel iron, we make these special treats right in front of you, fresh! Our joyful booth is decorated in everything Dutch, and both of us being of Dutch origin, we hope to bring the Netherlands to you.
A stroopwafel's layers are made of a stiff cookie dough ball that has been pressed in a hot waffle iron for 45 seconds until crisped. While still warm, the waffles are sliced horizontally to allow the disc to be easily separated into top and bottom wafers. A caramel filling —also warm—is spread between the wafers before the waffle is reassembled. The caramel sets as it cools, thereby binding the waffle halves together. This time and temperature-sensitive process creates the ultimate binding of crispy waffles with creamy caramel for blissful crunchy chewiness.
According to Dutch culinary folklore, stroopwafels were first made in the city of Gouda either during the late 1700s or early 1800s by bakers repurposing scraps and crumbs (called kruimels in Dutch) by sweetening them with syrup. As the national cookie of the Netherlands, they have become synonymous with Dutch culture.

I am a studio artist. For 24 years, I resided in Colorado until relocating back to Canada in late 2016. I attended York University (Arts) and Ryerson (at the time Polytechnic Institute for Design). After a Craft Residency at Pilchuk Glass School in Seattle, I attended Pikes Peak Community College for metal smithing. My coursework focused on colour and material development.
I make jewelry. All the larger beads are made by me, by hand. They are lampwork, where soda-lime (soft) glass is melted in the heat of a single-fuel torch and wound around a steel mandrel. All my beads are kiln-annealed for durability. I make most of my findings. They are silver or copper, handmade by me, or acquired. All of the hollow beads and most of the other beads have metal (copper, silver, pennies, dimes, aluminum that is etched by laser) riveted onto the end of the bead. The hollow beads are usually filled with seed beads, copper springs, origami, etc., before capping.
Last year, I purchased a vitrigraph kiln with the intent of making my own glass rods/cane ("twisties") and murrine to incorporate into my beads.

Repurposing rustic items has always been a natural love of mine. I love antiques, unique items and re-working odd materials to build something beautiful. The imperfect, weathered textures of old grooved woods, time-worn metals and old wavy glass show wonder and potential in a beauty that cannot be manufactured. I create household and yard items where every piece is unique and has its own story. The products to be displayed in the 'Perth Night Market' will include birdhouses, mirrors, small furniture, and decorative pieces that are repurposed from dismantling barns and materials that I have salvaged myself (from local barns and outbuildings). After graduating from Algonquin College in Perth, I wanted to use my knowledge of the Heritage & Carpentry Course to showcase my love of old materials, that would otherwise get thrown out, to make pieces that are useful, rustic and beautiful. |

I am a studio artist. For 24 years, I resided in Colorado until relocating back to Canada in late 2016. I attended York University (Arts) and Ryerson (at the time Polytechnic Institute for Design). After a Craft Residency at Pilchuk Glass School in Seattle, I attended Pikes Peak Community College for metal smithing. My coursework focused on colour and material development.
I make jewelry. All the larger beads are made by me, by hand. They are lampwork, where soda-lime (soft) glass is melted in the heat of a single-fuel torch and wound around a steel mandrel. All my beads are kiln-annealed for durability. I make most of my findings. They are silver or copper, handmade by me, or acquired. All of the hollow beads and most of the other beads have metal (copper, silver, pennies, dimes, aluminum that is etched by laser) riveted onto the end of the bead. The hollow beads are usually filled with seed beads, copper springs, origami, etc., before capping.
Last year, I purchased a vitrigraph kiln with the intent of making my own glass rods/cane ("twisties") and murrine to incorporate into my beads. |

I am a self-taught artist and while my formal education and occupational training have certainly leant well to learning applicable skills for my artisanal craft I have always found it far more satisfying and engaging to learn new skills of my own volition and inspiration through research, dialogue with fellow artisans, and also conversations with existing or potential clients. This learning strategy has allowed me to undertake research and experimentation for years, proving very worthwhile in the development of my craftsmanship and also learning from mistakes. All my pieces move through a process of ideation, research, design, production and refinement and are one-of-a-kind made one at a time.
My chainmail and forged pieces are very texture-oriented. My forged items are designed to both enhance and interact with lived indoor and outdoor environments. For chainmaille, I create inspired patterns for earrings, necklaces, belts etc. from metal rings that stand out from generic factory-produced designs. The way my assembled rings settle when worn lends these items an almost fidget-friendly quality while remaining eye-catching and comfortable to wear.
My silver items showcase the wide variety of colours, textures, and patinas that sterling silver offers as a material, which stand out in their deliberately unconventional and asymmetrical style. Critically, my pieces do more than sparkle, they catch the eye because of their textures, vibrance, and uniqueness while remaining comfortable and lightweight.

Beautifully hand-turned wooden treasures from my studio to your home.
I've always enjoyed working with wood but started turning wood in 2013 to try something new, and as a stress reliever from my full-time job. I fell in love with the craft very quickly, joined my local woodturners guild and started entering competitions and craft shows soon afterwards. In 2018, I retired from full-time work and began transitioning my wood-turning hobby into a small business, participating in local craft markets and taking on commission work. In 2020 I opened my Etsy shop, "ButternutRidgeStudio".
What I enjoy most about woodturning is that each piece of wood holds its own set of surprises - rich colours, grain patterns, bark inclusions - all adding additional character to the piece. In a sense, my job is to help reveal what nature has already created and help turn it into a treasured keepsake or family heirloom. Whether it's a Spurtle or a one-of-a-kind Natural Edge bowl, every piece that leaves my shop, is sanded to a minimum of 1200 grit, and finished with high-quality, food-safe finishes.

I have a confession... I LOVE FABRIC! This obsession with fabric started in my early twenties. I accidentally started quilting... Haha! And here we are 25 years later (a big pause in this time to raise kids & work)...and I am so lucky to now have this GLORIFIED SEWING ROOM in Downtown Perth! I am so thrilled you are here, with me, on this journey!
This "side" of the story started a few years ago, after we had moved to the Perth area. Our family moved right into a diary farm and milked cows for several years. As the kids got older I realized my passion for quilting, sewing, and beautiful fabric was stronger than ever! So out came the sewing machine and Xmas gifts got made for all my family that holiday season.
This was the beginning of The Plaid Cow! Here we are 4 years later and I am lucky to have a shop to call my own, it's basically a giant sewing room and I LOVE IT! Can't wait for you to visit,
