The Mill Street Playground (officially known as the Central Perth Playground) was opened in 2007. The Town of Perth is currently in the process of selecting a design for new equipment, taking public input into consideration. Below you'll find more information, including the full proposed plans for Option A and B, details as to why the equipment is being replaced, accessibility requirements, and more.
View the two proposed design options, which include site plans, 3D renderings, and inclusive play benefits. Existing fencing around the park will remain in place. (Note: these designs are not final. Public input is being considered and may result in amendments to the proposed plans.)
Why is the equipment being replaced? |
The equipment that is currently at the Mill Street Playground has a 15-year lifespan, which has been reached in 2023. Replacement of the structures was slated for this year in the Town's Asset Management Plan. |
Why can't you leave the existing equipment and build a new park somewhere else in Perth? |
The existing equipment has reached the end of its lifespan and requires replacement, in keeping with our Asset Management Plan. Establishing a new park requires increased staff levels and funding, which isn't possible within the current budget. With that said, the Town has received funding through a separate grant to make improvements to Perthmore Park, including a picnic shelter and small play structure. Any new subdivision developments within the Town will include considerations for parks/playgrounds. |
Can the existing equipment be reused elsewhere in Perth? |
Unfortunately no. The cost for removal and reinstallation is substantial, which would severely impact the budget for equipment replacement. After a review of removal costs, it was decided that the existing equipment would be posted for sale on a Government asset dispersal site. This will also allow us to recoup removal costs and allocate the entire project budget to new equipment, as well as keep materials out of the landfill. |
Where are the funds coming from for the new equipment? |
The equipment replacement is being financed exclusively through grant funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. |
What are the requirements for the new design? |
The Request for Proposals (RFP) included the following requirements for the new play structures;
The RFP was posted on the Town website and on Biddingo - a government contract portal - and available to contractors on March 17, 2023. Submissions were due April 10, 2023. |
How will the new design be accessible? |
The new design must comply with the Accessible Outdoor Play Spaces Requirements as outlined by the AODA. Both playground proposals include a mix of ground level and elevated components to address the varied physical and social needs of children. We encourage you to review the inclusive play benefit summaries within each proposal, which outlines how each component is instrumental in the development of a child and highlights which sensory systems are being engaged, the use of motor skills, cognitive skills, and social skills. |
Has there been consideration in terms of sustainability and environmental impact? |
Yes. View the environmental information for the proposed structures, which includes carbon footprint and recycled content details. The old playground equipment will be sold, diverting from the landfill. |
How can I vote on my preferred design? |
