Over 100 years ago a luxurious Russell-Knight automobile made the journey from Ottawa to the home of Senator Peter McLaren at Nevis Cottage in Perth. It was one of the first cars in Perth, and certainly the finest car the people of Perth had ever seen.
This July, the McLaren car will return to Perth for the first time in over 60 years. Owner Peter Findlay is bringing the car from British Columbia and will re-create the 1910 trip from Ottawa to Perth on Thursday, July 13.
“We’re thrilled that the McLaren car is returning to Perth, even for a brief period of time,” states Kathryn Jamieson, Manager of Tourism & Culture. “We welcome everyone interested in local history or early automobiles to join us in welcoming home the 1910 Russell-Knight.”
The historic drive will begin in Ottawa at the corner of Sparks St. and Bank St. At 11:00 a.m. The route will head west out of Ottawa and through Richmond, concluding at the Perth Museum on Gore St. at 2:00 p.m. The vehicle will be on display at the museum from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., and The Findlays will be available to answer questions as well as offer demonstrations.
