Despite their best efforts to maintain services in the Perth Emergency Department, a COVID-19 outbreak has impacted staff and led the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital to make the difficult decision to temporarily close the Emergency Department. The closure will be in effect from 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 2 to Thursday, July 7. You can view the full press release here.
“After discussing the current COVID-19 outbreak at the Perth Emergency Department with Perth and Smith Falls District Hospital Director Michael Cohen and Board Chair Gardner Church, I concur that the temporary closure of the Perth Emergency Department is unavoidable,” states Mayor John Fenik.
Anyone requiring immediate medical attention should call 911; paramedics will route to the nearest emergency department for care. For other urgent care needs, the Emergency Department at the Smiths Falls site remains available 24/7. Alternatively, the Carleton Place & District General Hospital and Almonte General Hospital are available as well.
As the Perth Emergency Department reopens, it will do so gradually. Effective Thursday, July 7 the Emergency Department will operate from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Further updates will be shared through the hospital’s Facebook page.
“As Mayor of the Town of Perth I, my Town Council, and the community's expectation is that the 24/7 Emergency Department at the Perth site will be restored as soon as possible. Anything less is completely unacceptable,” says Mayor Fenik. “Over the next couple of days, I will be speaking with Provincial Minister Steve Clark and MPP John Jordon about this concerning turn of events and the possible solutions that may be available."
The Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital is a separate entity from the Town of Perth and is governed by a Board of Directors. Comments regarding the closure can be sent to Karen Kelly at kkelly@psfdh.on.ca or 613-283-2330 ext. 1129.
