Ah, fall. The changing colours, the brisk mornings and cozy evening, the pumpkin spice lattes. It’s a turn of seasons that almost everyone seems to adore. There’s also a quality to the light that makes for great photography.

Many families opt to do photo shoots in the fall, whether out of tradition or in anticipation of holiday Christmas cards, and Perth offers the perfect backdrop for the occasion.

We took a trip around town to uncover our favourite picture-perfect spots for photography, and documented the trip with our model, Rachel. What fun! So, whether you’ve hired a photographer or you’re taking the pictures yourself, grab your people and hit the town on foot with our list of the top 9 places in Perth for fall photos.

1. Crystal Palace and The Docks. With cast iron benches, a long stretch of boardwalk and a few canoes on the dock, this spot offers many places to snap a good picture. Find shade under the trees, or shelter from the rain near the Crystal Palace if that’s what the day has in store (photos are often better on cloudy days anyhow!) Photograph kids walking hand in hand on the boardwalk or sitting on the waters edge.

2. Beckwith Street Truss Bridge. While this may not be the first place you’d think to do photos, this historic bridge offers a rustic, edgy feel for those looking to get a less traditional portrait. Wait for a quiet moment on the street to capture someone walking down the centre of the bridge or leaning on one of its metal beams.

3. The Old Jail. With its high stone walls, ledges and ample shade, the Old Jail is a great spot to snap a family photo. Park on Beckwith and take the short staircase up onto the grass along the main wall. Not only does the stonework make a lovely backdrop, the area is relatively childproof, so you can let them run!

4. Last Duel Park. At this time of the year this park is quiet and offers a variety of places for a great photo. There is a small, picturesque log building, which is fun to use as a backdrop, but you could also photograph family and kids on the loose in the grassy fields or along the water edge.

5. The Rainbow Bridge. This dramatic bridge is a private and scenic spot! Snap a photo at the top of the bridge or on the bench near the river. The view of the river and the gentle rapids makes a lovely backdrop.

6. The Alleyway Near Heritage Bikes or the Perth Museum. Alleyways are hidden gems for photography. Their stone walls offer tons of texture and character for photos, and they are often a shady and quiet place to wrangle children for a photo.

7. The Riverside Walkway Beside Coutts Café and Roastery – With the scenic fire hall in the distance and Mex & Co’s patio across the meandering river, this quiet walkway is iconic. Take a photo along Coutts’ stone building or capture the river in the background along the beautiful cast iron rail.

8. The Perth 200 Dry Stone Bridge. Where else can you find such a unique, meaningful spot for photos? A historic bridge, newly renovated platform area and the river in the background make this a lovely backdrop for photos. If the photographer stands far enough back. they’ll get the Perth water tower in frame for a perfectly Perth-themed shot.

9. Stewart Park. We asked local photographers Pamela Schnurr, Serreh Burritt and Kerry Ford where they enjoy taking photos in town, and all of them suggest Stewart Park. Whether it’s an intimate setting in the gardens, a whimsical moment in the willow trees, a classic bridge portrait or some candid shots of children at play in the open grass, Stewart Park has it all. And as fall sets in and the trees begin to turn, the park is lit up with vibrant reds, oranges and yellows.

Depending on the time of day and the weather, Perth has an endless number of places to take beautiful fall photos. So, grab your camera and some family and friends and head out for a fall photoshoot this September!
